The next machine [above] sorts the lighter stuff from the heavier stuff in a different way. The wild rice mixture (mostly kernels plus some kernels still with their hulls on) drops down onto a surface that has ridges running across it, the black area on the machine.
The black surface slopes down to the left. The heavier wild rice kernels settle to the bottom of the mixture and collect in the ridges. The machine vibrates vigorously. As it vibrates, the surface propels the kernels up hill to the right. [above] You can see some kernels fly into the air because the machine is vibrating so hard. |
