By experimenting, La Ronge Wild Rice Corporation has discovered that some wild rice can be cured in the bags delivered from the harvester. The wild rice at the centre of the bag becomes warm due to fermentation. Sun and wind dry the bag of wild rice and this slows down the fermentation. So each bag must be watered, both from the outside and from its centre.
To water the centre of the bag we designed a hollow tube with tiny holes in it. Every once in a while, we stick the tube into the middle of a bag, turn on the water, and wet the middle of the bag where the rice is warmest. The bag method usually cures in 4 or 5 days, faster than the windrow method. But the bag method can only be used with some shipments of wild rice. |
