The Indian Teacher Education Program is turning 50 this year

ITEP's director Yvette Arcand shares the program's importance with CBC Saskatoon Morning show host Theresa Kliem.

Arcand was joined by Doug Cuthand, who was working for the Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations in 1973 when ITEP was first established, to share why the program was established 50 years ago.

"I started [in ITEP] in 1991, and graduated in 1996. Before that, I knew that I would always want to be a teacher, but I wasn't sure exactly if I was smart enough. When I started the education program, I was quite shy. But [being in ITEP] kind of gave me that confidence in order to know who I am, as an Indigenous person, but also as as a potential teacher in the future," said Arcand.
