The larger unwanted material (leaves and stems) stays on top, but unfortunately some of it can get stuck in the spaces in the scalp screen and will plug up the holes. Did you notice the balls under the scalp screen in the previous picture?

These rubber balls bounce around and hit any material stuck in the holes. This keeps the screen from plugging up, and the wild rice is able to drop through the holes onto the conveyor belt below.

As you saw in the screening process, we take advantage of gravity whenever possible. Gravity is free. Or at least it seems so.

But to take advantage of free gravity, we need to raise the material up to a high height. This takes creativity to design a machine and it takes energy to run it. ("$") So gravity isn't quite as cheap as you might think.
