The next machine does the hulling. The huller breaks open most remaining hulls wrapped around a wild rice kernel. Inside the machine are two rollers, each covered with a rubber lining. One type of rubber is stiffer than the other.
The wild rice material is dropped between the rollers. The red roller on the left turns clockwise, while the black roller on the right turns counter-clockwise. The rollers crack most of the remaining hulls. This frees the kernel inside. The mixture of black kernels and golden-brown hulls (plus bits of other foreign material) falls through to the next machine.
