The wild rice is next dropped into a machine that gets rid of tiny stones. We call it a de-stoner. Its floor is made of a fine screen material so air can blow upward through it but no object can fall through. The floor is at a slope, as well. The de-stoner vibrates vigorously and at the same time, the floor moves up hill while air blows upward through the floor.
This combination of a vibrating floor and blowing air makes the mixture act as if it were a liquid. If you peeked in one of the round windows in the de-stoner, you'd see the wild rice bounce around. The lighter part of the mixture floats to the top (the wild rice grains), while the heavier part sinks to the bottom (the tiny stones).
