TRC Film Screening event awarded Prix d'Excellence
The "Understanding and Finding Our Way: Decolonizing Canadian Education" Film Screening and Discussion event held in September 2023 to mark the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation was recognized with a Prix d'Excellence Gold award by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education.
The "Understanding and Finding Our Way: Decolonizing Canadian Education Film Screening and Discussion" held last September was recognized with a 2024 Prix d'Excellence Gold Award by the Canadian Council for the Advancement of Education in the Indigenous/Reconciliation Event category. Awarded June 18 & 19, the Prix d'Excellence recognize distinction in alumni & community relations, marketing, communications, fundraising, and donor relations in post-secondary institutions across Canada.
Congratulations to contributors Elder Mary Lee, Dr. Verna St. Denis, Linda Aspen Baxter (Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation) and emcee Yvette Arcand. The event was held in partnership with the Saskatchewan Teachers' Federation and organized by the Fall 2023 Anti-Racist Education Subcommittee of the college's ohpahotân committee chaired by Dr. Carmen Gillies with members Isabel Bacalao Azpurua, Linda Bowen, Dr. Sanjukta Choudhury, Meagan Hinther, Connor Jay, Dr. Julia Paulson and Audrey Swan.
The Understanding and Finding Our Way: Decolonizing Canadian Education (2021) film was produced by USask Professor Emerita Dr. Verna St. Denis through the support of Dr. Jennifer Simpson, Principal Investigator of the Social Science and Humanities Research Council grant: Building and Mobilizing Knowledge on Race and Colonialism in Canada. Directed by award-winning filmmaker Alison Duke, the creation of the film followed appropriate protocols under the guidance of Elder Mary Lee.
Film discussion guides are available on the STF website and were created in partnership with Dr. Verna St. Denis and Shelly Tootoosis. Resources can be used for teacher professional growth, by school community councils, and by parents, caregivers and community members.
