Overview
The Department of Curriculum Studies at the University of Saskatchewan offers a graduate program that addresses the relationship between practice and theory in curriculum research, design, implementation, evaluation, and leadership. Those choosing to pursue a Master of Education in Curriculum Studies will be encouraged to focus on aspects of praxis leading to expertise and leadership in that area.
Who would be interested in an MEd in Curriculum Studies? Anyone participating in teaching in its various forms – in the K-12 system, the postsecondary system, and informal education – who wants to study one or more aspects of curriculum, such as research, development, implementation, evaluation and leadership for change.
There are three program options for this degree:
- Thesis-based: in addition to coursework, you will work with a supervisor to conduct an original research study
- Project-based: as above, but instead of a thesis you will be completing a project or minor thesis
- Course-based: you will take a selection of courses including a capstone class 'scholarship in teaching'
Students take similar core courses and different electives that suit their learning goals. While each individual course has a focus, students are also expected to develop aspects of their area of interest. In addition to course offerings from Curriculum Studies, students are able to take elective courses from other departments providing these courses contribute to their areas of interest. Students may also take up to 6 cu of coursework through another Western Canadian university if these courses are approved as part of their official Program of Studies.
Program Options
- Ed. (Thesis) – 21 credit units plus thesis
- Ed. (Project) – 24 credit units plus project (6 cu) – 30 cu total
- Ed (Portfolio) – 27 credit units plus portfolio (3 cu) – 30 cu total
