Scholarly Teaching Certificate (STC)

Advance Your Teaching. Lead in Learning.

The Scholarly Teaching Certificate (STC) is a new non-credit professional learning program at the University of Saskatchewan designed for mid-career faculty and/or professors of teaching who want to take their teaching to the next level. This certificate supports faculty in moving beyond effective teaching toward scholarly teaching—a critical step for those who aspire to lead in teaching and learning within their academic units or engage in the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL).

This progam will be launched in Winter 2026 (date TBD).  We are currently accepting registrations from interested faculty members to be among the first to participate in all we have to offer.

What is the Scholarly Teaching Certificate?

The STC is a structured, competency-based program that builds on your existing teaching expertise. Through a combination of workshops, peer learning, and/or applied projects, you will:

  • Deepen your understanding of evidence-based teaching practices.
  • Critically reflect on your teaching and its impact on student learning.
  • Develop the skills to evaluate and improve teaching using scholarly approaches.
  • Prepare for future engagement in SoTL research.
Accessible and Flexible: This certificate is offered free of charge to eduators and is designed to accomodate the busy schedules of faculty. It provides meaningful, sustained professional development in a format that supports both autonomy and engagement.

Why Should You Enroll?

As a mid-career faculty member, you’ve already demonstrated baseline teaching competence, likely the level required for tenure, or appointment as a professor of teaching. The STC is designed to help you:

  • Deepen your teaching practice through engagement with educational literature and evidence-based strategies.
  • Reflect critically on your instructional choices and their impact on student learning.
  • Lead and mentor by supporting colleagues, guiding curriculum initiatives, and contributing to a culture of teaching excellence.
  • Engage in scholarly inquiry that connects your teaching to broader conversations in higher education.
  • Build a foundation for SoTL—whether you plan to publish, present, or mentor others in scholarly teaching.
  • Strengthen your teaching dossier for leadership roles, awards, and recognition.

Who is it For?

The STC is ideal for faculty who identify as being at the “effective teaching” stage and are ready to engage in scholarly teaching. If you are curious about the scholarship of teaching and learning (SoTL) or want to influence teaching culture in your department/unit, College, or the institution  this certificate is for you. See the USask Teaching Journey graphic below.

Teaching Road Map

How is it Different from Other Professional Learning Opportunities?

  • Beyond Baseline Competence: The Certificate of University Teaching and Learning (CUTL) is designed to support educators in developing effective teaching practices. In contrast, the Scholarly Teaching Certificate (STC) is intended to take your teaching to the next level. Whether or not you've completed CUTL, the STC is geared toward experienced instructors who are ready to deepen their practice.
  • The STC emphasizes scholarly teaching, encouraging faculty to enhance their instructional approaches by engaging with and applying educational literature. Through this certificate, participants will critically reflect on their teaching, explore evidence-based strategies, and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement in higher education.
  • Focused on Scholarship: Other workshops and short courses are informed by widely accepted research on teaching and learning in higher education. The STC encourages faculty to draw on evidence-based, research-informed theory, and critifcal relection to inform and enhance teaching practices. These skills empower educators to attempt more innovative teaching approaches and contribute to the conversation with other scholars about their effectiveness.
  • Leadership-Oriented: This program prepares you to take on leadership roles in teaching and learning. Participants will develop skills to mentor peers, lead curriculum development initiatives, and contribute to institutional efforts that promote teaching excellence.

Program Structure

As a competency-based program, STC is designed to be flexible and adaptable to your professional context. You can choose to build competencies independently through your own teaching and scholarship or participate in existing professional development opportunities for more structured support. There is no fixed timeline for completion, but a focused educator can reasonably expect to complete the certificate within one to two academic years.
