Saskatchewan-Ternopil Oblast English Education and Training Program Receives RCE-SK Award

In March 2024, the University of Saskatchewan (USask) College of Education hosted a 10-person delegation from Ukraine's Ternopil National Pedagogical University (TNPU) for a three-week program focused on teaching English, collaborative research and intercultural exchange.

The delegation, including Ternopil K-12 teachers, a TNPU professor, and government leaders, completed a university course on language teaching and engaged in local cultural activities, school visits, and meetings with education and government partners.

Organizers from the College of Education worked through the Saskatchewan Education Leadership Unit (SELU) to deliver this program. Members of the organizing team included Dr. Vicki Squires, Associate Dean of Research, Graduate Support, and International Initiatives, Dr. Greg McJannet, SELU Associate Director, Nadia Prokopchuk, Academic Advisor and Instructor for EAL Education, Megan Fillatre, Graduate Programs and Internationalization Specialist, and Holly Mayes, SELU Office Manager.

Partners from Ternopil Oblast in Ukraine included Dr. Olena Huzar, Director of the Centre for Teaching Excellence at Ternopil National Pedagogical University, Olga Khoma, Director of Education and Science, Ternopil Oblast, and Olha Pokhylyak, Head of Education for Ternopil City Council, as well as seven teachers of English from the city of Ternopil.

On May 30, 2025 the University of Saskatchewan – Ternopil National Pedagogical University project received a Saskatchewan recognition award from RCE, which is the province’s United Nations university-designated Regional Centre of Expertise (RCE) on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). The award honours projects that encompass dimensions of ecological, economic, social, and cultural sustainability. The Saskatchewan-Ternopil Oblast project aligned well with seven of the UN ESD goals.
