The College of Education is a vibrant community, where opportunities frequently arise that lead to employment for students.  Generally speaking, student employment falls into the Teaching Assistant and Research Assistant categories.

Teaching Assistants

Though commonly limited to graduate students, taking on the position of Teaching Assistant (TA) often provides students to gain practical experience with University-level instruction.  Adding a TA position to your resumé or CV strongly supports future applications for academic employment.   Though not a comprehensive list, work of this type often involves tasks that are highlighted below:

• • Assist in the preparation of course timelines, materials, and assessments;
  • Assist in the evaluation and marking of student work;
  • Engage in the teaching of course lessons, units, or other material;
  • Engage in the facilitation of small group activities;
  • Work with students outside of regularly scheduled class time, offering supplemental supports or instruction;
  • Motivate students toward curricular end goals;
  • Collect materials and data necessary to administer the course;
  • Attend instructor meetings; and
  • Respond to questions and other communication on behalf of the course professor..

Research Assistants

Taking on the position of Research Assistant (RA) is a valuable opportunity for students to gain practical experience with the research process.  Adding a RA position to your resumé or CV supports future applications for graduate studies and professional employment.   Though not a comprehensive list, work of this type often involves tasks that are highlighted below:

• • Collect, analyze, and synthesize data;
  • Assist with manuscript preparation and submission;
  • Assist with conference proposal preparation and submission;
  • Assist with the creation and design of conference presentations;
  • Engage in the review of literature in support of a research project;
  • Transcribe qualitative interview data;
  • Conduct interviews related to a research project;
  • Attend research meetings;
  • Assist with the preparation of ethics applications;
  • Assist with the writing of journal articles for publication; and
  • Facilitate workshops, among others.
