USask ITEP graduate receives prestigious teaching honour
University of Saskatchewan (USask) graduate Craig Edes was awarded the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation Award at Fall Convocation on Nov. 12.
By Connor JayOf Gitxsan descent from the Frog Clan, House of Haawx in the northwest interior of British Columbia, Edes was selected based on the merits of his teacher candidate portfolios and academic achievement.
Edes has actively served as a poet and emcee within the Canadian music scene for more than a decade under the name The Northwest Kid, with previous releases including Mixed-blood Mixtape, Mob Medicine, Dozy & NWK and Transformation. His work has allowed him to share the stage with artists such as Jeremy Dutcher, The Halluci Nation, Tanya Tagaq and Lido Pimienta.
Outside of music, Edes studied Acting for Stage & Screen, completed the NextUp training program, obtained an Aboriginal Focus Oriented Therapy and Complex Trauma certificate and is a co-lead with Save Rez Dogs.
He is passionate about Indigenous Studies and anti-oppressive education. Edes enjoyed his time in the Indian Teacher Education Program (ITEP), where he embraced Indian Control of Indian Education as a teacher candidate.
Edes completed his field experience placement in the Waskawiwin Land-Based Learning program at Bedford Road Collegiate. His collaborating teacher noted how he demonstrated significant growth and dedication during his placement. Edes' ability to engage students, build relationships, and thoughtfully integrate Indigenous perspectives ensured a successful and impactful practicum placement.
When speaking with ITEP staff, they describe Edes as compassionate, empathetic, very talented and knowledgeable. They mentioned how he is an excellent role model because of his willingness to share his experiences using his soft-spoken tone.
Edes currently works at White Buffalo Youth Lodge and is on the substitute teacher list with the Saskatoon Public Schools division.
